Can misophonia be diagnosed?

No, misophonia cannot technically be diagnosed by a professional because there are no published diagnostic criteria yet.

However, misophonia is officially recognized as a unique disorder by audiologists, psychiatrists, and psychotherapists.

Although there are not yet official diagnostic criteria for misophonia, assessment methods such as the S-Five Survey and Duke Misophonia Questionnaire are being validated through research. This process leads us closer to proposing diagnostic criteria, and therefore closer to diagnosing individuals with misophonia.

In the meantime, people with misophonia can seek help and get accommodations without an official diagnosis.
